ORIGINS

THE STORY OF ORIGINS BY 880 SOUTH

The Origins album is our homage to a piece of our musical history. It’s one part of the genres that shaped us over 2 decades of songwriting, which is why we named it “Origins” and plan to follow it with more genre concept album themes. In 2024, we released 24 songs as an experiment, just the five of us sorting things out and seeing how viable it would be to create from home and release new material. Weege was fresh off his solo project and needed something solid to build on. The original 3 members of 880 South, Greg Medeiros, Steve Shyshka, and Luigi Casaretto, reconnected online and were soon joined by new bandmates Chelsea Martinez and Roy Camello, which allowed them to create high-quality music together from their home studios. Lockdown made it possible for them to create across 2 different states, pushing them to record and collaborate remotely. Origins is the result of a work of art from a labor of love and an abundance of studio experience.

Weege has a fireside chat with Missy because she knows the 20+ years of 880 South history straight from the practice room, touring and the studio.

As narrated by Luigi Casaretto (Weege)

Who started 880 South, and when?
880 South was created in 2001 on the brink of the break up of the funky quintet, the Floppy Rods. Weege was encouraged by longtime friend Josh Fischel of Bargain Music to try and write music that fits his own personal interests. So after quitting Floppy Rods, he hadn’t seen his former bandmates for months but had new ideas developed. Weege and former Rods guitarist, Steve Shyshka connected at a house party in Campbell, CA and he played Steve some demos he wrote in a Pro Tools session. Weege had been learning how to engineer midi music and how to track music at Foothill College and took some amateurish steps to record his own guitar and vocal stems. Steve was chasing his Music degree at San Jose State and he and Weege planned a weekend on campus to record on an analog system and Steve would play bass and Weege would play guitar. Before sessions started they decided to invite Rods bassist and songwriter Greg to play guitar. A complete switch from the original lineup. Greg had been chatting with local San Jose drummer, Casey Cox who was in the band JTS. They would all collaborate and record their first 4 song demo professionally at Street Noise Studios. Owned by former Rods drummer Aaron Liebelt. Eventually, Casey would move on to other projects. Greg switched back to bass, Steve switched to guitar and the original 4 members from Floppy Rods met at a local bar to officially make 880 South a reality.

What was the original vibe—musically and personally?
The music was always a hybrid approach with rock as the backbone but reggae and soulful funk as the lead horses. The band would always get dubbed into a reggae rock sub-genre but always considered themselves alternative rock. Musically the challenge was connecting genres and infusing their own influence of jazz, rock, funk and ska/reggae.

What defined that first era—key moments or struggles?
880 South was a spinoff series of The Floppy Rods. A band that already established itself heavily in funk and soul and played several shows up and down the coast, making several connections in key markets on the west coast. So it was an easy transition to get on great shows, pack their hometown venues and release 2 albums that would transform their entire future, “Beware” in 2006 and “Youth Bus Sessions” in 2008. With hit songs like Effect of Sunshine, Apartment 28 and Sex on the Beach, 880 South would create a nostalgic wave of music nobody but the band expected to take off.

Why’d you bring it back?
Weege had tried for years to keep the 880 brand going for so long after Steve left the band in 2010, eventually Weege gave up trying to keep it afloat. Greg and Aaron would eventually quit, Greg would come back and they added Brandon Valatka on guitar. Weege had done a few shows with new band members and toured with The Holdup a little and even created a side band called The Year. It was just not the same vibe even with Dub Rock Records supporting the band. Around 2012 he created the “Weege” brand with Greg Medeiros and they took their experimental home studio approach even further. That eventually became a band when Weege moved to Colorado in 2017. In 2019, Greg flew out before the covid era of changes kicked in and recorded 8 songs for the Weege band in Colorado. Weege wrote 2 more songs to add to the album and Greg decided to record bass on them on Logic from his home studio. This was the first signal that running a studio production remotely was now a viable thing. Chelsea was in the Weege band and was interested in some of the music Weege had been developing for the next album but the Weege band was starting to dissipate and lose momentum. Weege decided to call the next project 880 South and brought Greg, Chelsea & Weege into a new era of songwriting. In the same months Greg would connect Steve Shyshka and Weege again. Suddenly the opportunity to reunite the original band was becoming a reality. They went on to release 24 singles in 2024 a little haphazardly but in the spirit of experimentation they achieved their goal and brought relevance back to the 880 South brand. In the same year, they were asked to perform at the Yampa Reggae River Festival in Craig, CO. They found local drummer Roy Camello who Weege had been recruiting in the past to join the Weege band. It all worked out beautifully and they booked 3 more shows in 2024 as a band and returned to Northern California. Roy officially joined and they added Cole Thorne on percussion and keys.

Who’s in 880 South now?
880 South is currently made up of 6 people. Luigi Casaretto on Vocals/Guitar/Keys, Greg Medeiros on Bass, Steve Shyshka on Guitar, Chelsea Martinez on Horns/Backing Vocals, Roy Camello on drums and recently added Cole Thorne as auxiliary, percussion and vocals. She'll get more studio time on this next Origins II album we're developing.

What’s changed—life, locations, approach?
The safe answer is that we’re all wiser and more crafty. Truth is we’re a little more mature as songwriters, but not much. Our songwriting reflects that positive energy and growth and we take a self serving approach to developing our songs. We only aim to please ourselves and we feel lucky that we have fans who appreciate this approach and understand we’re only trying to impress ourselves. Hopefully that doesn’t make us seem altruistic in nature but life is short and we have full time jobs, families and responsibilities beyond music. We also believe in ourselves and feel our collaborative music is something we birthed and should absolutely nurture. The advantage of working remotely and having our own studios really gives us this extra nudge to say, “we don’t need 12 songwriters, a producer and a record label telling us what’s good and what isn’t”. This is what makes sense for us as a band right now, it’s like a communion of creativity and we harbor all of these resentments and rejections over the years and convert them into something positive and beautiful. In the end we’re studio gangsters, but by choice. We can easily rip it up live.

How’s this lineup different—chemistry, sound, material?
Original 880 South had an alternative rock edge to it. A 4 pc really hammering at great transitions and solid pockets. The vocals were more power driven and beltish, the lyrics were immature but trying to be mature sometimes. The sound altogether was more aggressive. This 6 pc version of 880 South has evolved into a soul infused grit with more components and complexities. Adding layers of horns, multiple guitar arrangements, more prominent keys and backing vocals created a much fuller sound. Make no mistake the power behind the basslines and drums is still reminiscent of old 880 South. Lyrically at the age of 47, I’ve seen and lived through a lot. I have great memories and stories and it’s not just feelings that I feel, it’s what I’ve learned from ’em, good or bad. I’ve allowed myself to be even more vulnerable and while some songs are true stories, others can just be great stories or concepts that people can relate to or heal from. Sometimes I let it breath and stories unfold with metaphors and emotional depth. It’s changed a bit from all the raucous energy and now it’s scars and real lessons with deeper roots. Vocally, I’ve chilled out on the range of my voice. I found my pocket but I can still flex when it counts which makes those moments even more exciting. All together our sound has always been about creating beautiful peaks and valleys in our sound that tie into the emotion of the lyrics.

What’s the motivation behind the music?
We just want to write what feels good to us without interference. We love concepts, we have so many in the pipeline. We recorded so many reggae songs we could easily release a second one but we’ll hold onto those B-sides for another project or drop them as singles later. We’re developing a funk & soul album next at the end of 2025. We already titled it Origins II. There is talk of developing an easy listening 70s & 80s Yacht Rock infused album, an alt rock album and even threw around the idea of doing some samba funk infused bossa nova jams. We want to continue to grow as artists but we don’t want to be tied down by record labels and this scene that we’re in. There are too many gatekeepers currently in reggae rock and reggae music. We’ve come this far with little to no budget, so what happens when we actually try? 50k monthly listeners is a big deal to us, that’s globally some real people who discover us and support us. We're so lucky to even have that in our life. At this point, we’ve lived some pretty full lives, so we’re not scared to experiment. We’ve already fallen on our faces a few times, that aint nothing.

+ Origins as a Reggae Album

Why Origins? What's the concept?
For me personally, Origins is a homage to our history in music, or at least one part of that medley of genres that influenced us. That’s why we’re titling it “Origins” and our next album “Origins II”. We might even drop an Origins III if it suits us. Releasing 24 songs in 2024 was a huge experiment, and it was just the 5 of us figuring each other out. I was just coming off that Weege project, looking for dedication and consistency. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0xzy1q9l5bYNdAZQTQOK8W?si=bd34c51461674f54 Some songs had Steve on them, some didn’t, some songs had Chelsea on horns, some didn’t. Some had real drums with Kevin Higuchi on drums, some had Roy Camello on drums, some were me reprogramming drums I already captured in a lo-fi studio setting. It was true-to-life experimentation, and no rules. Greg and I just wanted to keep making music, and the Weege project I started was just wearing me thin. I needed something tangible I could build from, and the 880 South name was already so well established. I just wanted to do one thing and do it really well, and to have the chance to make high-quality music with my old bandmates was too hard to pass up.

Why lean into reggae now?
It’s always been in our DNA. Greg always had a background in reggae with his Polynesian/Hawaiian family, so did I with my Latin American roots. Growing up, we played a lot of Steel Pulse, Bob Marley, and UB40, but dabbled in a lot of the subgenres of rocksteady, ska, lovers rock as we expanded our musical horizons as individuals. Yes, we dabble in a lot of different styles of music, but we always joked, Could you imagine if we just did a dedicated reggae album? So we did. Unfortunately, we just couldn’t foresee it happening because the band lineup in the Floppy Rods was vastly different in terms of influences, and then when we started 880 South, we were a lot more rock and soul infused than reggae. Since the lineup changed, we’re able to tap into our roots, so to speak. Having Roy with a strong reggae background is a lifesaver too. So it was always a discussion and a concept we wanted to try someday. The crazy thing is we probably wrote about 23 new songs and settled on 11. We could easily release a B-side style album or a whole other reggae album. Our goal was to create concept albums dedicated to genres that influenced us. Origins is the first step in that evolution, and we’re super proud of what we accomplished so far.

Why remote—choice or necessity?
After COVID, we got to experiment a lot remotely during the Weege phase, and when we reconnected with Steve, we just couldn’t WEEGE foresee this band recording music without him or Greg. So the rebirth of 880 South is only possible because of platforms like WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Zoom. Having all our gear in our homes just made life easier to create. Even though we have distractions and setbacks, we can work at our pace. Sometimes that’s really fast, and sometimes that’s really slow. We make our own rules, what more could you ask for? I guess the short answer is agility, having that ability to turn it around quickly, but also pause when you need to without the meter running.

What would define success for Origins?
I would imagine it’s different for everyone. From my perspective, I have evolved from songwriter to producer. So I have seen what a sync and publishing deal can do for an artist. When I landed a deal with my song “The Girls” that I wrote for The Holdup, it was eye-opening. I didn’t just get money in my pocket (because it was a substantial advance that made a huge difference in my life), but I saw the lights come on. It’s always been my biggest ambition to achieve some level of publishing success. My wife and I watch this show called Rescue: HI-Surf, it’s a lifeguard drama but it’s got beach vibes, summertime tropic nuances and I hear reggae music like ours on this show all the time. Instantly I reach out through IMDB to find who’s making the music supervisor decisions and I stumble on this guy CJ Mirra. I messaged him but got nothing back but I'm not giving up. CJ, check this album out bud! Anyway, I don’t really do this to win Grammys, I don’t do this to get pats on the back or all the accolades. I have always been in this to impress myself and my bandmates but ultimately I want opportunities to grow and become the producer I know I can be. I wouldn’t be mad if we won awards, played California Roots Festival again, or got to tour South America, Japan, Australia like we always planned. Success means a lot of different things to a lot of people, so for me, when I get fans who I’ve never met asking me questions on TikTok and using our songs on social media UGC, that’s a HUGE win in my book and a huge indicator of success. I think our longevity and our ability to stay somewhat relevant with little to no marketing or budget to tour is miraculous and already a huge success. Now if we could just blow that up 100X, we’d be comfortable.

What comes after Origins?
Origins II is already planned, some demos tracked even and it will be a dedicated album focusing on our groove-laden influence, such as soul, funk, R&B. Tapping into a lot of what we did with The Floppy Rods but also expanding on it with more experience and alternative influences. It’ll be a little more multifaceted than the reggae album because those genres can really be spread out pretty far, but between all of our natural influences we grew up with and our own writing styles, it’ll be a pretty crazy collaboration. Think Otis Redding, Jamiroquai, Earth Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye, Steely Dan, Prince, James Brown, Funkadelic, Tower of Power, and even the Chili Peppers. We’re leaving no stone unturned. Let’s go.

+ SONG LYRICS
+ Start a Home

Now this might take some time, to find what we want and start a home
You can’t change my mind, I know sometimes that I’m headstrong
So we fall in line, cause compromise gives us what we both want
When I made you mine, I promised to be yours and yours alone

I need you, you need me to
Does it even need to be set in stone
cause
you already know, you already know

Honey, I got loving, I got money, don’t you worry no more
It’s the perfect time
so let’s make this home

Now this might take some time, to find what we want and start a home
You can’t change my mind, I know sometimes that I’m headstrong
So we fall in line, cause compromise gives us what we both want
When I made you mine, I promised to be yours and yours alone

I need you, you need me to
Does it even need to be set in stone
cause
you already know, you already know

Honey, I got loving, I got money, don’t you worry no more
It’s the perfect time
so let’s make this home

We built this brick by brick
Foundation first, let's get to work
We always get our kicks, Sometimes it clicks
Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it hurts,
But it’s worth it

It’s worth it, if it’s working, and it’s working good

+ Comeback

I don’t think you’re ready for the comeback
When I comeback
I don’t think you know where my love’s at
It’s at a 1 from Defcon 5
That’s right, it’s an all time high
That’s why, I feel so alive

Do you know what I’m feeling tonight
It’s been weeks since we’ve been beside
We can never find a perfect time
We’ll make it ours, tonight, just you and I

It's you and I finally alone
you and I finally alone
you and I finally alone
It's just you and I finally alone

I don't think you're braced for this new ride
It’s like a landslide
I don't think you've seen where my heart's at
I’m overdue, it’s all for you
That's right, so dim the lights
That's why, I'm feeling high

Do you know what I’m feeling tonight
It’s been weeks since we’ve been beside
We can never find a perfect time
We’ll make it ours, tonight, just you and I

It's you and I finally alone
you and I finally alone
you and I finally alone
It's just you and I finally alone

alone
It’s the comeback
alone
comeback
alone
it's the comeback
alone

+ Shaken

I used to run like the river, free and steady
The wind on my neck kept guiding me
I landed on her shore from the rising seas
and she took my hand so obligingly

Golden like the sunrise on sacred land
But she’s soft as the touch of the rain upon my hands
Circadian rhythm vibrates the earth below my feet
Teaching me things that only she could teach, at a high degree

Ooooh, I’m shaken up
Ooooh, and I awaken love

I keep shaking, shaking, shaking that tree
I wonder if she knows that I’m so ready
She calms the wild winds, into everlasting peace
And when the mood is right, we find our release
No chains, no cage, I was running free
I found my peace already surrounding me
Like the sun needs the moon, seed needs the ground
Without this light, I would never be found
Golden like the sunrise on sacred land
But she’s soft as the touch of the rain upon my hands
Circadian rhythm vibrates the earth below my feet
Teaching me things that only she could teach, at a high degree

Ooooh, I’m shaken up
Ooooh, and I awaken love

+ The Way I Do

Let the sun rise, Feel it in your eyes, Ya Guey

My mind, my head, might drift away, My heart, my soul, will find its place
My mind, my head, all that I have obtained, My heart, my soul, just can't bare the pain

If the way I feel inside doesn’t hold a deeper truth
You should trust what feels right cause you know I’d never lie to you
If you knew what was in my mind, It might feel like impending doom
But the truth is in plain sight, When you feel the way I do

Just keep it simple, don’t dig too deep
One step at a time before you complete
We all fall, but don’t skip a beat
Eyes open but you’re still asleep

My mind, my head, might drift away, My heart, my soul, will find its place
My mind, my head, all that I have obtained, My heart, my soul, just can't bare the pain

If the way I feel inside doesn’t hold a deeper truth
You should trust what feels right cause you know I’d never lie to you
If you knew what was in my mind, It might feel like impending doom
But the truth is in plain sight, When you feel the way I do

No charlatans can sell you on schemes
Your intuition can fuel what it means
Stand up, It ain't always what it seems
Wise men don’t sleep on dreams

My mind, my head, might drift away, My heart, my soul, will find its place
My mind, my head, all that I have obtained, My heart, my soul, just can't bare the pain

If the way I feel inside doesn’t hold a deeper truth
You should trust what feels right cause you know I’d never lie to you
If you knew what was in my mind, It might feel like impending doom
But the truth is in plain sight, When you feel the way I do

My mind, my head, might drift away, My heart, my soul, will find its place
My mind, my head, all that I have obtained, My heart, my soul, just can't bare the pain
When you feel the way I do, When you feel the way I do
When you feel the way I do, When you feel the way I do

+ Second Chance

Is this love or a second chance, to right all the wrongs that I've had
Is it enough, is it gonna last, cause I don't know what I have left
And there you are, and there you are
And there you are, and there you are

I’ve seen, I see some things
I couldn’t see before
I'm starting to feel it again
So let me explore

I need, I need some reasoning
But now I know I need you more
I guess I needed to heal a bit
So what are you waiting for

Is this love
Is this love
Is this love
Is this love

+ Virtue

Come out from the shadows, and become the light, just shine
We all have our battles, they’re deep down inside, but we must shine, shine

Your compassion flows like a river wide, when your honor and love is applied
Plant the seeds for the tree of life, your truth is going to shine, shine

Gratitude will lift you high
Forgiveness paints a brighter sky
In fairness, we learn to fly
Persevere, if it’s real, love will never die

Your virtue is the answer, that’s how you heal the pain
Your love and courage will break those chains
One heart, one love, there is no need to explain
Let mercy and grace lead the way

You will never be alone, just shine
Have faith, hold strong, just shine
You will never be alone, just shine
Have faith, hold strong, just shine

In the light you find a home, just shine
That is where your hope belongs, just shine
I promise you, just shine
You are not alone

+ Waiting on You

I’ll just wait all day, You know I need you to just tell me
That we are gonna be A-okay Or should I just be on my way?
So I wait all day waiting for you to just tell me
That everything will be A-okay, Say the word and I’m on my way

I’m just waiting on you
I’ve got my heart in this
Some things we can’t undo
all we’ve been through, I’m all in

Where did you go? I only wanted to take it slow
These games have too many rules but kings don’t play to lose

I’m Just Waiting On You, I’m Just Waiting On You
I’m Just Waiting On You, Go ahead

I’ll just wait all day, You know I need you to just tell me
That we are gonna be A-okay Or should I just be on my way?
So I wait all day waiting for you to just tell me
That everything will be A-okay, Say the word and I’m on my way

I’m just waiting on you, I’ve got my heart in this
Some things we can’t undo, all we’ve been through, I’m all in

Where did you go? I only wanted to take it slow
These games have too many rules but kings don’t play to lose

I’m Just Waiting On You
I’m Just Waiting On You
I’m Just Waiting On You

I’ll just wait all day, You know I need you to just tell me
That we are gonna be A-okay Or should I just be on my way?
So I wait all day waiting for you to just tell me
That everything will be A-okay, Say the word and I’m on my way

Are you on your way, I just waited all day
Is it A-ok?, I’ll just wait all day

Pssh

+ High Stakes

High stakes, you already know
What it takes, I bet you know it
The heartbreak will feed your doubts
Don’t let it all break you down

Don’t let them silence your crazy loud
Someday you’ll figure it all out
Dream chaser, no stopping now
Fly high and don’t let them knock you down

So why wait? You’re not getting younger
For your sake, stop betting under
I’d say you won’t, end this hunger
So don’t waste this summer

Don’t let them silence your crazy loud
Someday you’ll figure it all out
Dream chaser, no stopping now
Fly high and don’t let them knock you down

High stakes, you already know
What it takes, I love you all
This is not goodbye
It’s so long to my old life

High Stakes
High Stakes
This is not goodbye, it’s so long to my old life
High Stakes
What it takes, I love you all
This is not goodbye, it’s so long to my old life
Dream chaser, no stopping now
You are so much stronger than you think you are now

+ Rooted in Love

You think it's crazy. I’m crazy, I know
I just can’t fake it, I’m crazy in love
I just keep making, making you blush
Maybe I’m saying, saying too much

But let me tell you, that it came down from the lord up above
He's given me more than enough
Yes i am, rooted, rooted in love
Yes i know… cause it's the only other thing I know

And if you wonder, what the other thing is
You're gonna find out, real quick
And if you wonder, wonder, wonder, what the other thing is
You’re gonna learn something new about the man you’re with
It’s the love I give, yeah, righteous

And if you feel what I’m feeling, it’s more than enough
I’m singing praises, praising our love
All the time it’s taken, why has it taken so long
To see that we're rooted, deeply rooted in love

But let me tell you, that it came down from the lord up above
He's given me more than enough
Yes i am, rooted, rooted in love
Yes i know… cause it's the only other thing I know

And if you wonder, what the other thing is
You're gonna find out, real quick
And if you wonder, wonder, wonder, what the other thing is
You’re gonna learn something new about the man you’re with
It’s the love I give, let’s go

+ Mango and Tajin

Cool ocean, take in the breeze,
You’re my sunshine, the calm in my seas.
Mango drips like a golden treat
Pull closer, move to the beat on rhythm
Dance with the spice of life
We don’t have a whole lot of time left
And my arms wanna hold you tight
I know we feel the same vibes ooh yes

Cantinero, mixed it up right
Were gonna go-all night
Y hasta la madrugada
We can do what we wanna

Let’s mix it up
I got this feeling I love
We are living our dreams
with a little bit mango and tajin

¿Por qué vamos a irnos? No te vayas
Mira esta playa, tan cristalina
Si tú fueras mía,
la vida sería divina
Ya compré la camisa,
¿Por qué irnos? Me da risa,
eres tan rica.

Cantinero, mixed it up right
Were gonna go-all night
Y hasta la madrugada
We can do what we wanna

Let’s mix it up
I got this feeling I love
We are living our dreams
with a little bit mango and tajin

Así es la buena vida,
vivimos una vida buena.
Solo disfrutamos la vida,
viviendo la vida buena.

+ Realize

When are you gonna realize? It’s always been between your eyes
Every time you lose control, Looking back you wish you let it go
Time to get the show on the road, It's harder when you’re out on your own
Is this what you wanted to be every day of your life, naturally?

Sometimes I talk to the moon
With the hopes that I renew
God knows, I will not be consumed
Worried about what I can’t do, I choose to be free

To fight wretched and the wicked
Use our hearts to make a difference
We got to find a way
We got to, be strong

Suppression will take a toll on the soul, We were destined for so much more
For what life you have left, There is no life behind a desk
Were these your dreams as a child? Can you remember the last time you truly smiled?
Do you ever feel lost at sea? drifting further away, aimlessly.

Sometimes I bark at the moon
I go primitive, and I pursue
Lord knows, if I ever withdrew
Knowing everything that I knew, I will be free

To fight the wretched and the wicked
Use our hearts to make a difference
We got to find a way
We got to, be strong

We got to find a way
We got to, be strong
Find a way
We got to, be strong
